GREENVILLE, Ill. – Greenville University football showed resilience with a strong second-half effort, but visiting Lakeland University capitalized on turnovers and short-field opportunities to claim a 41-20 victory Saturday afternoon at Francis Field.
The Panthers moved the ball effectively throughout the contest, totaling 357 yards of offense and controlling possession for more than 32 minutes. However, three interceptions, two lost fumbles, and 134 yards in penalties proved costly against a Lakeland squad that converted those opportunities into points.
Lakeland struck first late in the opening quarter when Jontae Lambert capped a nine-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give the Muskies a 7-0 lead.
Greenville responded early in the second quarter with an impressive 12-play scoring drive.
Gavin Baldwin powered into the end zone from two yards out to trim the deficit to 7-6. The Panthers' extra point attempt was unsuccessful, and Lakeland quickly seized momentum.
The Muskies scored four unanswered touchdowns over the next 11 minutes, including three touchdown passes from quarterback Carson Glosny and another short rushing score from Lambert, building a 34-6 halftime advantage.
Despite the deficit, Greenville refused to fold.
The Panthers opened the second half with renewed energy. After forcing a Lakeland turnover on downs near midfield, quarterback
Breylan Dewberry led a six-play, 50-yard drive that ended with a spectacular 33-yard touchdown run.
Derek De Haan added the extra point to cut the margin to 34-13.
Greenville continued its comeback effort late in the third quarter and into the fourth. A 47-yard drive culminated in Dewberry's second rushing touchdown of the day, a two-yard score that brought the Panthers within 34-20 with 14:51 remaining.
The Panthers had another opportunity after
Jayden Morris intercepted a Lakeland pass early in the fourth quarter, but a promising drive stalled inside Muskie territory. Lakeland answered with a methodical 82-yard scoring drive, finished by Lambert's third rushing touchdown of the afternoon, to restore a three-score lead and seal the 41-20 final.
Dewberry was a bright spot for the Greenville offense, accounting for 219 total yards. The sophomore completed 15-of-32 passes for 161 yards while adding 58 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Baldwin contributed 20 rushing yards and a touchdown, while
Jashaun McKinley added 50 rushing yards and led the Panthers with 47 receiving yards.
Logan Keith hauled in three receptions for 40 yards, and
Jackson Jokisch provided a key 27-yard receptionÂ
during Greenville's fourth-quarter scoring drive.
Defensively,
Jamuary Taylor and
Julian O'Malley paced the Panthers with 10 tackles apiece.
Morgan Jackson added seven stops, while
Jordan Womack recorded Greenville's lone sack. Morris and Tayshaun Hayes each came away with interceptions.
Lakeland finished with 366 total yards and was led by Lambert, who rushed for 97 yards and three touchdowns.Â
Glosny threw for 134 yards and three scores.
Greenville (0-2) will look to build on its second-half performance as they travel to Lyon for a game at 3:30 p.m. next Saturday.
