GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Greenville University women's soccer team showed resilience Friday night, scoring twice against visiting Wilmington College, but the Panthers ultimately fell 5-2 in a non-conference matchup at Francis Field.
Wilmington struck first in the 26th minute when Delaney Benjamin found the back of the net off an assist from Macy Million.Â
Greenville responded just four minutes later with a well-worked equalizer.
Elizabeth Altenbernd set up
Ava Pollard, who finished the opportunity in the 30th minute to tie the match at 1-1.
The Quakers regained the lead before halftime as Elyse Waggoner scored in the 42nd minute, sending Wilmington into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
Wilmington extended its lead in the second half with goals from Avery Minteer, Jordan Snyder, and Aidyn Danison to build a 5-1 cushion.
The Panthers continued to battle and earned a late reward in the 73rd minute when
Josie Sanchez delivered an assist to Altenbernd, who finished to make the score 5-2.
Pollard and Altenbernd accounted for Greenville's two goals, while Altenbernd and Sanchez each recorded assists.
Alexa Chavez led the Panthers with three shots, and Pollard and
Lucia Altadonna each placed a shot on goal.
In goal,
Kadynce Jones made four saves in the first half before
Natalie McCullough recorded four more stops after halftime, combining for eight saves on the evening.
Wilmington held a 20-7 advantage in shots and a 13-3 edge in shots on goal. The Panthers were unable to earn a corner kick, while the Quakers finished with two.
Greenville (0-5) will look to build on its offensive effort as the Panthers continue their non-conference schedule next week.
