GREENVILLE, Ill. – The women's soccer team put together a competitive effort at home on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell 3-1 to Central (IA).
Ashlie Johnston Cabral netted her first goal of the season, and junior goalkeeper
Madison Ashford collected five saves to anchor the Panthers defensively.
How it Happened:
1st Half
Greenville opened the match with energy and pressure, testing the opposing defense early.
Allyson Schulz fired the game's first shot on target in the 4th minute, forcing a save from the goalkeeper. On the defensive end, Ashford made a key stop in the 18th minute to keep the game scoreless.
Despite the early momentum, the visitors broke through in the 25th minute following a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers continued to rotate players and build offensive chances, and several corner kicks gave Greenville opportunities, but they closed the half trailing 1-0.
2nd Half
GU came out aggressive after halftime and was rewarded in the 56th minute when Cabral broke past the defense and buried a shot to level the match at 1-1, igniting the home crowd.
The Panthers continued to press, with shots from
Jordyn Smith,
Katelyn Christensen, and
Maddie Cooke just missing the target.
However, the visitors responded with a goal in the 65th minute, reclaiming the lead. In the 77th minute, they extended the margin to 3-1.
Greenville battled to the final whistle with fresh substitutions and a determined midfield push but couldn't find a second goal. Ashford recorded multiple late saves to keep the match within reach.
