GREENVILLE, Ill. — The Greenville University women's soccer team controlled much of the action Monday night, but Monmouth converted its limited opportunities into a 2-0 victory at Francis Field.
The Panthers outshot the Fighting Scots 27-5 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, yet were unable to solve Monmouth goalkeeper Cadence Covert, who recorded six saves in the shutout.
Monmouth took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when Lily Palazzolo scored off a rebound opportunity. Greenville responded with several quality chances before halftime, including shots on goal from
Avery Rahden and
Brady Unger, but entered the break trailing by one.
The Panthers continued to press in the second half, firing 19 shots after intermission.
Alexa Chavez led Greenville with nine shots, while
Idaly Valenzuela added 10 attempts. The Panthers generated four corner kicks in the opening 14 minutes of the second half and repeatedly threatened the Monmouth goal.
Monmouth doubled its advantage in the 60th minute when Morgan Kistler finished a pass from Jackie Contreras to make it 2-0.
Greenville nearly broke through in the 73rd minute when Valenzuela's shot struck the crossbar, highlighting a frustrating night for the Panthers despite their offensive pressure.
Rahden led Greenville with two shots on goal, while Cooke, Unger, Chavez and Valenzuela each placed one attempt on frame. Goalkeeper
Natalie McCullough played all 90 minutes for the Panthers.
Greenville finished with advantages in shots (27-5), shots on goal (6-2) and corner kicks (6-2), but Monmouth made the most of its two shots on target to secure the victory.
The Panthers (0-8) travel to Central (Iowa) for a match on Thursday.
