GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Greenville University women's tennis team opened its fall campaign Saturday morning at the Scott J. Burgess Tennis Complex, battling Rose-Hulman in a closely contested match.
After dropping the doubles point, the Panthers responded with an impressive effort in singles competition, claiming four of the six singles matches. Greenville's success was highlighted by dominant straight-set victories from
Irlanda Oliver,
Lauren Poole,
Elena Warren, and
Madeline Beck.
Oliver led the way at No. 1 singles with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory over Emerson Donaldson. Poole was equally impressive at No. 3 singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Addie Patterson.
At No. 4 singles,
Elena Warren controlled her match from start to finish, earning a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Nova Gladden.
Madeline Beck added another point for the Panthers at No. 5 singles with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Julia Burt.
The most competitive match of the day came at No. 2 singles, where
Emily Kowalke battled through a three-set marathon. After winning the first set 6-3 and edging the second set in a tiebreaker, Kowalke narrowly fell in the decisive third set.
In doubles action, Greenville picked up a victory at No. 2 doubles as
Lauren Poole and
Makenna Hackney teamed up for a 6-3 win over Maya Oniciuc and Addie Patterson. Rose-Hulman claimed the other two doubles matches to secure the early advantage.
The Panthers return to action on Sept. 29 at home against Illinois College.
