FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Greenville University women's volleyball team turned in one of its most complete performances of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Alma College in straight sets, 25-10, 25-14, 25-20, at the Franklin Invitational inside the Spurlock Center.
The Panthers controlled the match from start to finish behind an efficient offensive attack and strong play at the net.
Greenville posted an impressive .452 hitting percentage, recording 48 kills with just six attacking errors on 93 swings. The Panthers hit better than .370 in every set and opened the match with a dominant .583 attack percentage in the first frame.
Leading the offensive charge was
Abby Grohmann, who delivered a match-high 19 kills while hitting .447. Grohmann was nearly unstoppable throughout the afternoon and added a block assist to cap a stellar all-around performance.
Sierrah Downey added 10 kills on a remarkable .529 hitting percentage, while
Kennedy Legendre contributed seven kills and hit .538.
Makenna Reckling chipped in five kills and three block assists, and
Alyssa Company added four kills while hitting .500.
Running the offense was
Emma Ratermann, who dished out 40 assists and helped Greenville maintain a balanced attack that kept Alma out of rhythm throughout the match. Ratermann also contributed a service ace and two blocks.
Defensively, the Panthers were led by
Claudia Bonacorsi, who totaled a match-high 14 digs, while Ratermann added eight digs and
Emily Ruppert collected eight more. Greenville also controlled the service line with nine aces, including two each from Bonacorsi,
Brooke-Lynn Mapa, and
Mia McSchooler.
After cruising to a 25-10 opening-set win, Greenville maintained its momentum in the second set, pulling away for a 25-14 victory. Alma provided its toughest challenge in the third set, but the Panthers answered with timely kills and strong defense to close out the match, 25-20.
Greenville finished with a decisive advantage in nearly every statistical category, including kills (48-25), hitting percentage (.452-.134), assists (47-25), digs (42-29), and blocks (11-1).
The Panthers (4-3) host Millikin on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in H.J. Long Gymnasium.
