Softball wins two against Millikin on opening day

DECATUR, Ill. – The softball team kicked off their season with two wins against Millikin, rallying late for a 7-4 win in game one and racing to a 13-5 game-two win.

How it Happened:

Game 1

A late-game surge lifted Greenville to a 7-4 comeback victory over Millikin in both teams' season opener.

Trailing 4-0 entering the sixth inning, Greenville capitalized on defensive miscues to plate three unearned runs, cutting the deficit to one.

In the seventh, Natalee Moore delivered the decisive blow, launching a grand slam to right-center, giving the Panthers a 7-4 lead.

Melissa Bernal started the game for the Panthers, but Greenville's Destiny Dunlap earned the win, tossing three scoreless innings in relief.

Game 2

The Panthers erupted late in the game to power past Millikin 13-5.

A seven-run sixth inning broke the game open as Greenville improved to 2-0 on the season, while Millikin fell to 0-2.

Millikin struck first in the opening frame. However, Greenville responded in the third inning with two runs, highlighted by a Moore RBI single.

After Millikin regained the lead in the bottom of the third, Greenville answered back with a solo home run from Emma Longcor in the fifth to tie it at 3-3.

The Panthers went off for seven runs in the sixth, capped by a three-run double from Jayden Zamora and a two-run single by Josie Grunloh.

Valerie Greenley sealed the win with a two-run homer in the seventh.

Sarah Salas earned the win, allowing five hits and striking out five in 5.2 innings.

Up Next:

The Panthers (2-0) host Lawrence next Saturday for their home opener.
