Baseball wins Grinnell and Illinois Col. matchups

GREENVILLE, Ill.  – The baseball team got after it this week, showcasing their skill in their home opener versus Grinnell and recording another win against Illinois College.

How it Happened:

Game 1 vs. Grinnell (W, 12-8)

Greenville jumped out to a commanding 7-1 lead after three innings, highlighted by a three-run homer from Miggy Villalobos in the first and a two-run double by Snyder Pennington in the second.

In the seventh, the Panthers capitalized on wild pitches and hit batters to add four more runs, extending their lead to 11-4. Grinnell fought back with two runs in the eighth and a two-run double in the ninth, but their comeback bid fell short.

Greenville's Dax Bailey earned the win, allowing two runs over four innings, while closer Jacob Hammer got the save. Villalobos led the Panthers with three RBIs, hitting .500.

Game 2 vs. Ill. Wesleyan (L, 10-4)

Despite early offensive efforts, the Panthers were unable to slow down the Titans' bats.

Greenville matched Ill. Wesleyan with a run in the first and second innings, as Villalobos and Matt Rocco each recorded RBI singles. However, a four-run third inning by the Titans put the Panthers in a hole they couldn't climb out of.

Trent Morgenstern added an RBI single in the seventh, and Alex Jackson brought in a run in the ninth, but Greenville was unable to mount a comeback..

Starter Cade Buehnerkemper allowed six runs (five earned) over three innings. Relievers Ty Kueper and Luke McBee provided solid outings, combining for four shutout innings.

Game 3 vs. Illinois Col. (W, 7-6)

In a dramatic back-and-forth battle, Greenville secured a thrilling 7-6 victory over Illinois College. A late eighth-inning home run and a sacrifice fly proved to be the difference.

Greenville took an early 4-0 lead behind key hits from Michael Gibson, Pennington, and Alejandro Martinez.

Illinois Col. responded in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 6-5 lead.

However, a clutch solo home run from Rhett Pennington in the eighth tied the game, and Martinez's sacrifice fly secured the win.
