Softball keeps second place in SLIAC East Division with split against Webster

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The softball team maintained their second place position in the SLIAC East Division with a two-game split against Webster on Monday. The Panthers lost game one 5-3 before winning game two 3-1.

Greenville went ahead early in game one, receiving RBI singles from Mia Boyd and Jaclyn Belzer to establish a 2-0 lead.

With single runs in the second and fourth innings, Webster tied the game and eventually went ahead 4-2 with two runs in the fifth.

Boyd did her part to rally the Panthers, hitting a solo home run in the top of the sixth to cut the Gorloks lead to 4-3, but Webster gained an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to win 5-3.

Melissa Bernal pitched all six innings for the Panthers, allowing five runs, two earned, on 11 hits and four walks.

Boyd continued her strong season with a perfect 3-for-3 effort at the plate.

The Panthers held off Webster for a 3-1 win in game two, receiving a three-hitter and nine strikeouts from Alison Klaus for the victory.

Megan Chapman homered in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and Boyd added a run for the Panthers with a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Panthers (13-17, 7-5 SLIAC) travel to Spalding for a doubleheader on Thursday before returning home for a doubleheader on Saturday against the SLIAC West Division leading Fontbonne Grffins.
