Women's basketball suffers 73-67 setback at Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The women's basketball team competed in a contest with five ties and seven lead changes on Wednesday night, but Greenville finished on the short side of a 73-67 decision against Illinois College.

Greenville raced out to an early lead against the Lady Blues, taking an 18-7 lead when a three pointer from Amanda Brooks went through the net with 1:50 to play in the first quarter. The Panthers finished the first period with an 18-11 lead.

Illinois College scored 11 straight points during a scoring drought by the Panthers that ran over seven minutes as the first quarter ended and second quarter began, and that allowed IC to develop a 22-18 advantage. The Panthers pulled back ahead by halftime with a 9-4 run of their own, and GU led 27-26 at the intermission.

A 22-14 third quarter in Illinois College's favor ended up providing the difference that Greenville was unable to overcome despite a 26 point fourth quarter scoring explosion from the Panthers.

Emily Reinneck ended the contest as GU's top scorer with a 13 point outing. Reinneck also collected four assists and three steals.

Madelyn Stephen posted 11 points, and Payten Morris compiled 10 points and team-highs with nine rebounds and three steals.

The Panthers (1-5) will host Illinois College on Saturday at 2 p.m. with a junior varsity contest to be played at noon preceding the varsity contest.
