Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball topped by Eureka

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The women's basketball team lost 89-76 to Eureka on Saturday afternoon in a game that pushed them to second place in the SLIAC by one-half game.

The Panthers never led in the game as a 9-0 run by Eureka to start the contest gave them an immediate edge that was too much to overcome.  Greenville trailed 25-16 after one period.

Eureka took a 28-17 advantage in the second quarter to make the score 53-33 at the half.

Greenville gradually chipped away at the lead, tightening the score to 63-51 after three periods.

The Panthers dropped 25 points on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, but Eureka had 26 to gain the 13 point win.

Wesley Woodard led GU with 18 points, her third straight contest with 15 points or more.

Meredith Crosier gave the Panthers a lift off the bench with 15 points, and Naomi Johnson had 11 points.

Laura Goodnight had five points to reach the 1000 point mark in her 83rd game.  Goodnight and Kelly Lenz totaled six rebounds, and Maria Reinhard had six assists.

Greenville was victimized by an unusually poor shooting performance which saw them make 28-of-73 shots (38 percent), including a 3-of-25 mark (12 percent) behind the three-point line.

The Panthers (12-4, 7-1 SLIAC) return to action Monday at 6 p.m. against Spalding with a win being all they need to draw back even with Eureka.
