Baseball rises in SLIAC with sweep of Blackburn

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team swept Blackburn on Friday and Saturday in a doubleheader suspended on Friday night before its finish on Saturday. The Panthers won the two games 18-0 and 9-2.

Starting pitcher Luke Fleener commanded game one with a seven inning one-hitter. His no-hit bid was broken in the seventh inning by the leadoff batter who was later retired in a double play before Fleener struck out the final batter.

The Panthers received home runs from Jacob Sutton, Landon Mokris, Nathan Eye, and Miggy Villalobos in the game one victory.

Mokris went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI.

Sutton was 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs, and four RBI.

Markus Isaiah hit 3-for-3 with three runs from the number nine position in the batting order.

The Panthers took some time to generate offense in game two and erased a 2-0 sixth inning deficit with nine runs over their last three at bats.

Mokris sparked the Panthers with a two-run home run in the sixth inning that tied the game before a rain delay, and he later added a solo homer.

Mokris finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI.

Schneider and Snyder Pennington also posted long balls.

Braden Maltbie pitched six innings for GU, holding Blackburn to two runs, one earned, on six hits. He posted an astounding 11 strikeouts.

Cade Buehnerkemper and Jacob Hammer closed out the win on the mound.

The Panthers (14-23, 8-8 SLIAC) will host Rose-Hulman on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
