Baseball splits doubleheader at Webster

SAUGET, Ill. - The baseball team split a doubleheader at Webster on Saturday at Grizzlies Ballpark. Greenville lost the first game 6-4 before topping Webster 12-4 in the second game.

Greenville established a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one and a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning, but Webster matched Greenville in the bottom of both innings. The Gorloks posted the winning runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Jacob Sutton hit 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and Landon Mokris and Snyder Pennington went 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Luke Fleener started on the mount and pitched five innings. He gave up four runs on seven hits.

Braden Maltbie relieved Fleener and gave up two runs over three innings.

The Panthers took a 4-2 lead in the third inning of the second game and eventually pushed the score to 6-4 in the fifth inning as they rolled to a 12-4 win with five runs in the top of the eighth.

Sutton posted another 3-for-3 game with four runs scored and two RBI.

Mokris hit two home runs and drove in five runs in a 3-for-5 performance.

Pennington also homered and drove in four runs with a 2-for-5 appearance at the plate.

GU's winning pitcher Cade Buehnerkemper held Webster to three runs over five innings and picked up the win.

Jacob Hammer permitted only one run over three innings, and Ian Wilson closed the game for GU with a scoreless inning of relief.

The Panthers (12-22, 6-8 SLIAC) travel to Wabash for a game on Thursday at 2 p.m.
