ELSAH, Ill. -- The men's basketball team kept pace with Westminster for the first place position in the SLIAC with a 118-109 win over Principia in a make-up of an earlier postponement. Elmo Smith led Greenville with 20 points.
The Panthers took a 64-62 lead to halftime and gave up the lead on briefly in the second half. Greenville held the advantage for the last 12 minutes of the game.
Stevonte Young had 18 points for the Panthers and led Greenville with four steals as the squad forced Principia into committing 31 turnovers.
Greenville actually made two less buckets than Principia (42-40), but GC's accuracy beyond the three-point line was evident as they made 20 three-pointers while limiting Principia to just two.
Kenny Greene added 15 points for Greenville, and Kieshaun Young-Jones and Shane Smith each had 13 points.
The win gave the men's basketball team their most victories since the 2003-04 squad went 19-8, and it was the second most wins in head coach George Barber's 18 seasons at the helm as head coach.
The Panthers (17-4, 10-3 SLIAC) host Iowa Wesleyan on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
